House Finch
Haemorhous mexicanus
ORDER: Passeriformes
FAMILY: Fringillidae
House Binch: These cheerful sons-of-finches were originally native to Mexico and the Southwestern United States, but they moved their way up the West Coast in the '50s and '60s. Since then they have spread to the East Coast. In fact, now they pretty much cover the entire continent. Oh, and Hawaii. They appear in noisy groups in city parks and backyards nearly everywhere these days. Males sing a jumbled rambling string of short warbled notes. no one can make any sense of it. ...--Matt Kracht
Pasadena, I start seeing them out my kitchen window at the beginning of spring. And by the equinox they are going full swing. They are officious and busy....And little chowhounds!
He looks like he's iceskating!
